Peritoneal dialysis is a kidney failure treatment that filters the blood inside of your body using the lining of your abdomen, often known as your belly. This lining is known by the medical community as the peritoneum. A few weeks before beginning peritoneal dialysis, a surgeon inserts a soft tube into your abdomen known as a catheter. Waste materials can be removed from the blood through peritoneal dialysis. It is a treatment for renal failure, a condition in which the kidneys are no longer able to filter blood adequately. A purifying liquid is injected into a portion of the stomach region, commonly known as the abdomen, during peritoneal dialysis through a tube. The peritoneum, or inner lining of the abdomen, serves as a filter and eliminates waste products from blood. Peritoneal dialysis is distinct from hemodialysis, a more frequent therapy to clean the blood because it takes place inside the body. This operation uses a machine to filter blood outside of the body.
